2024 LxG Student Paper Award

The Latinx Geographies Specialty Group is pleased to announce the fourth annual award for best graduate student paper on a topic pertaining to Latinx geographies. Papers submitted could address the structures that affect Latinx lives on local, national, and/or global scales, as well as the cultural, racial and/or political geographies of Latinx peoples.

With support from ACME: An International Journal of Critical Geographies, the winner will receive a $300 award and the opportunity to workshop and consult with a member of the Latinx Geographies Awards Committee on their manuscript as they prepare for its submission to a peer-reviewed journal.

To apply for this award, applicants do not need to be current AAG/LxG members. However, if the winner of this award is not a current AAG/LxG member, they are required to enroll in our membership.

Applicants must send complete papers as a PDF attachment to latinxgeographies@gmail.com by April 1, 2024. (Please note, this email address is monitored weekly, so we may be slow to respond to any inquiries.) Papers must be between 8,000 to 10,000 words including references and notes; word count should be shortened commensurate with use of tables, images or other media. Submissions over the word count will not be considered. Only manuscripts written by a graduate student will be considered; co-authorship with research partners or other collaborators is encouraged, but co-authored papers with a faculty member are not eligible. We encourage graduate students to apply even if they feel their paper is not in a ‘publishable’ state yet, but holds promise.

One (1) award will be given each year. The recipient of the award will present their paper at the 2025 AAG meeting in Detroit, Michigan. The recipient is also invited to join the 2025 Latinx Geographies Awards Committee in the review of next year’s paper submissions. This invitation is part of Latinx Geographies’ commitment to mentoring emerging Latinx Geographies scholars and shaping the relatively new field of Latinx Geographies.

For the sake of transparency, in January 2024 this year’s Awards Committee will share the evaluation rubric that reviewers will use when assessing this year’s submissions. We encourage those interested in submitting their paper to review this rubric.

The results of the LxG Student Paper Award competition will be formally announced at the LxG Business Meeting, and the awardee’s name and paper title will be forwarded to the AAG for publication in the AAG Newsletter.

Sincerely,

The Latinx Geographies Board
