Mission Statement
We are a collective of Latinx scholars who formed a specialty group as part of the American Association of Geographers (AAG). Our intention is to create spaces of support and collaboration for Latinx scholars working in geography, and to further research, teaching and activism around issues pertaining to Latinx peoples. As a specialty group, we seek to create a global platform for: (a) promoting study of the political, cultural, economic, and ecological aspects of Latinx societies in/and geography; (b) encouraging approaches including critical race theory, anti-colonial and cultural studies that allow for intersectional analyses of the processes and structures that shape Latinx lives and geographies on local, national, continental, and global scales; (c) exchanging research, teaching, and mentorship ideas among scholars of race, Latinidades and ethnicity in/and geography; and (d) building greater ties between the discipline of geography and interdisciplinary studies including Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Race & Ethnic Studies and Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies. The use of the term Latinx with an ‘x’ at the end reflects the articulation of multiple Latina/o identities across nation-state borders, ethnic identities, and beyond gender binaries.
